About Melani
I am a professional chef, food writer, culinary educator, and the heart behind Mell’s Kitchen.
My love for food began long before I stepped into a professional kitchen. It started at home, watching my mother and the women in my family cook, gather, share, and create memories around food.
Over time, that early love grew into something deeper — shaped by culinary training, travel, fine dining kitchens, private chef work, and the privilege of teaching the next generation of chefs.
I studied at a culinary school in Pretoria, South Africa, where I graduated at the top of my class. I am trade-certified as a chef and have completed a postgraduate qualification in kitchen management.
My career has taken me through fast-paced fine dining kitchens, catering, private cheffing, and eventually into culinary education, where I became a culinary arts lecturer and later a practical training coordinator.
Mell’s Kitchen is where all of those experiences come together.

My approach to food is ingredient-led, rooted in storytelling, and inspired by nostalgia.
I love reimagining classic South African flavours, working with seasonal produce, and creating food that feels both comforting and considered.
Whether I am writing a recipe, preparing a private dining experience, or sharing a story from the kitchen, my hope is always the same — to make food feel meaningful, approachable, and memorable.
This is a space for food that carries memory, celebrates flavour, and invites people to cook with confidence.
